HISTORY OF LUCID DREAMING:

In short, A Dutch psychiatrist named Frederik van Eeden came up with the term for Lucid dreaming in 1913. He claimed that there are nine well-defined types of dreams in all, including ordinary, symbolic and vivid dreams.

SLEEP STAGES:

There are four stages of sleep:

  1. stage 1
  2. stage 2
  3. stage 3
  4. REM ( Rapid eye movement )
First three stages fall under NON-REM sleep.

NON-REM SLEEP: During non-REM, your brain waves, heartbeat, and eye movements gradually slow down.

1.stage1: Transition between waking and sleep. If awakened, the person will claim was never asleep.

2.stage2: Main body of light sleep. Memory consolidation.

3.stage3:  It is known as deep NREM sleep. Awakening of arousals are rare and often it is difficult to awaken someone in Stage 3 sleep.

4.REM sleep:  REM sleep, also known as rapid eye movement, is most commonly known as the dreaming stage. Also, your brain is extremely active and heart rate increases, blood pressure rises.

TECHNIQUES:

1.REALITY CHECKS: Reality checking is mental training, in which you ask yourself "am I dreaming?". Reality checks are performed in your waking time. This technique is developed after analysing the behaviour of our brain.

The science behind reality checks is, if we do something repeatedly in our waking time then chances are our brain will perform these tasks in our dreams too.

some common reality checks are:
  • Finger through palm: push your Index finger against your palm. If it passes through, then you are dreaming.
  • Nose pinch: Pinch your nose, If you can breathe, then you are dreaming.

2. Keep a dream journal:  Dream journal helps recall your dreams. Just keep a notebook and a pen beside your bed and write everything you remember about your dream, write every tiny detail.
when you write down your dreams, you're forced to remember what happens during each dream. It's said to help you recognize dreamsigns and enhance awareness of your dreams. Read your dream journal regularly.
